I've gone here for years and it's always been pretty good . The hot dogs are the best around. The only problem is the slow service but over all its worth a trip.. It's a greasy spoon type experience so adjust accordingly.

I totally get that only certain things are within the control of a restaurant. However, those things that are not contribute to the atmosphere and overall experience, so they factor into a review. Keeping that in mind, I had one of the most hilariously terrible experience at Ruben's recently. I used to work in Lake County and Ruben's was one of our frequent lunch joints. I was recently back in the area and decided to stop in for a quick dog. I had about 30 minutes to burn and figured, "how long can a pre-cooked piece of sausage take?" I was about to find out. Ruben's is a greasy, no frills kind of place. You order at the counter and I remembered the dogs being good (how can they not be) and cheap. This time I ordered a Chicago dog. I pay and sit at a table. Five minutes passes. Ten minutes. Fifteen minutes. I go back to the counter and ask to change my order to to-go. The very nice girl working the counter says, "ok" but I'm not really met with any urgency or "oh man, you're still waiting?" I wait, standing at the counter, for another five minutes. Then the hilarity begins. An older, clearly local couple strolls in and orders about $15 worth of food. The woman pays with a credit card and then out of the blue from the other side of the restaurant her husband starts screaming that the place smells like sewer gas (I hadn't noticed any odor) and that since the owner was "too cheap to fix it," he wasn't going to eat there. His annoyed wife then asks the counter girl to cancel their whole order. The girl then doesn't know how to refund their order and has to call the owner. We're at about 25 minutes wait time for me now. The girl is on the phone and I see the cook put what appears to be my order in the little kitchen pass-through window. On a tray, not packaged to-go. The counter girl is talking on the phone, not noticing that my order is sitting in the window. After about three more minutes of standing with my head down at the counter, I have to ask her if it's mine and then ask to get it packaged to go. Was the dog good? Not bad but it would have been nice if I could have eaten it at a table instead of 90 minutes later in my car after my meeting. Were the fries good? No. Completely unsalted and soggy after my meeting. I hate to be "that guy" who complains about food not being good b/c it sat out, but the only reason it sat out was that this place was so hilariously inefficient. To their credit, the cook and the clerk were the only employees there and they were somewhat busy. A group of four guys had just ordered a pretty good amount of food right before I came in, but still, the place had probably eight customers in it total and you would have thought there were 100 pending orders. I also cut them slack b/c I'm sure issuing refunds on a cancelled order is not an everyday occurrence, but come on, teach your employees how to do simple tasks. I'll happily give them another run next time I'm in the area and will happily update this review. But if you're looking for a quick lunch stop at a place that should be very quick, you may be sorely mistaken.

I have been going here for at least 25 years. Always has been a 5* rating for excellent food. The last two times I came here my order was not correct. The cold ham sub with swiss didn't have swiss it had american the first time. Tonight it had no cheese at all. However, this is a minor mistake. Food is excellent and it is a must try!!!

Though they used to be called Arman's, they're still serving up some of the best hotdogs in the region; same as they've been for decades. Snappy, beefy on a poppy seed bun. What more could you ask?
